Welcome to the Pentagon Ski Club!

2023 Ski Trips

June 12, 2022

Our 2023 ski trips are now open for signups!  Scroll down to see our offerings!  Our several non-skiing vacation trips are also available for registration/signups.

Epic & Ikon Passes:  Most of our 2023 trips are going to resorts that honor one of the multi-resort season passes.  You may purchase passes directly from the suppliers, but our tour operators have promotions offering rebates on the trips you might take with the club.  You may wish to consider purchasing your passes through them.  The exception is Military passes, which must be purchased from the suppliers.  Go to our Epic & Ikon Pass page to explore the various offers.  You should consider purchasing passes early-on as the cost typically increases in mid-April, at the start of the summer, and then again around Labor Day.  Pass sales are likely to end sometime in the fall.

Blue Ridge Ski Council:  Beginning August 1, 2022, registration for our 2023 ski trips will be opened to members of other ski clubs that are members of the Blue Ridge Ski Council through the "sanctioning" process.  Hint:  To register for a trip you must first "join" the PSC as a no-cost BRSC member and populate your membership profile.

Tips for All Trips

Trip Insurance:  Be sure to review our Trip Insurance page before signing up for a trip, and consider whether to purchase cancellation insurance.  Note that the cancel for any reason options require that you pay the premium within 14 days of paying your initial deposit on a trip.

Signup/Registration Tips:  Please take a moment to read the Trip Signup/Registration Tips.  Each individual must be logged-in with their PSC credentials (email address & password) in order to register (sign up) for a trip.  Before signing up, please take a moment to review your profile including your emergency contact information and (if you're thinking of a trip to Canada or Europe) your passport information.  Make sure your first and middle names exactly match your passport (or whatever ID you'll fly with) so your ticket gets issued correctly.  Then click on the trip's Register button if you're ready to sign up!  Your personal information will be pulled from your profile, and then you will need to select options specific to each trip, for example, what type of lodging you prefer (double occupancy or a single room at extra cost) and what type of lift ticket you want.

Important If you are registering someone other than yourself, you must log out of your own account and then log in with their credentials.  If you skip this step and register them while signed into your own account, their profile information won't convey into their signup record.  This is necessary even with family (bundle) memberships where you are the bundle administrator.

Wait-Listed Trips:  Click on the button to Join wait list and we may be able to confirm you on the trip if we have a cancellation, after confirming that you still want to go.  We're also sometimes able to expand a trip to accommodate additional skiers.

Trip Invoice & Initial Deposit:  An invoice will be generated for each trip you've registered for.  Each trip includes a payment table listing an initial deposit, one or more interim payments, and a final payment date.  You must pay the initial deposit, and any subsequent interim payments that have or are about to come due, to secure your place on the trip.  Your registration is not confirmed until we receive and acknowledge your deposit.  Payments can be made online with a credit card, or by check.  We can also accept credit card payments at club meetings.

    Tuesday, October 11th

    7:00 pm

    Register To Attend

by Monday, Oct 3, if you want a long-term pass (see below)

Our October meeting will be on Tuesday, October 11, 7:00 pm at Ft. Myer's Patton Hall (same location as always).  The evening will feature a presentation on boot fitting by Nancy Deely of Pro-Fit Ski & Mountain Sports in Leesburg, VA.  Nancy and her husband Brian, co-owners of the shop, are both certified by Masterfit University The shop is a 15-year member of America’s Best Bootfitters, a select group of top independent U.S. and Canadian ski and snowboard shops specializing in custom boot fitting.

Our complimentary Oktoberfest menu will include an assortment of German sausages with Three Bean Salad, Sauerkraut & Red Cabbage, Potato Pancakes with Applesauce, and Bavarian Cake for dessert.  A cash bar will be available for the drinks of your choice.

    Vax Required

We're continuing to require Covid-19 vaccinations for club meetings, as well as for club trips.  This is for everyone's safety and comfort level.  We will not be asking for proof of vaccination, but please do not register for or attend the meeting (or sign up for a trip) unless you are fully vaccinated.  Booster shots are of course also recommended and encouraged.

    Registration Required

We're asking everyone to register to attend.  This will allow us to adjust the catering, and to offer another opportunity for you to apply for a long-term (1-year) Ft. Myer Visitor Pass (see below). You must register by Monday, October 3, to be sponsored for a long-term pass.

    Bringing a Guest?

If you plan to come to the meeting with someone else, there are two ways to let us know:

    • If your companion is a club member in their own right, they can log in with their credentials and register for the meeting much as they would do if signing up for a trip.
    • Whether your companion is a club member or not, you can simply include them in your own meeting registration by clicking on the Add guest button before submitting your registration.

    If Your Plans Change

If your plans change and you can no longer attend, please let us know (ideally by Monday, October 3) so we can adjust our catering order.  You may do this by:

    • Calling (301-579-2749) or emailing Dave Olsen
    • Cancelling your registration yourself:
      • log into your account
      • click on your name at the top
      • click on My Event Registrations
      • click on your meeting registration
      • click on the Already registered link
      • click on the Cancel registration button

    Entry to Ft. Myer

Please take a moment to review our Entry to Ft. Myer page.  There are several ways you'll be allowed to enter:

    • Passengers:  Firstly, be aware that drivers won't necessarily be allowed to vouch for their passengers.  Although a photo ID like a driver's license might sometimes be accepted, passengers without an Automated Installation Entry (AIE) Pass (see below) or one of the other types of ID mentioned below might need to complete a Installation Access Request Form and pass the vetting process to enter the base.
    • With Suitable ID:  If you have an active duty or retired military ID, or a DoD-issued Common Access Card (CAC) (and possibly several other types of government-issued ID), you should be able to enter the base without screening.
    • Without a Pass:  If you arrive for a club meeting outside of Visitor Control Center (VCC) hours (see below) and without suitable ID, your vehicle will be searched and you'll need to be vetted through their security system before being allowed entry.  This may take some time, so we suggest that you arrive at the base early.
    • One-Day Pass:  You can apply for a one-day pass online at this website (click on the link).  You can then show the pass on your phone to gain entry.  However, application must be submitted at least four days in advance of your visit.  The process time may depend on your footprint in various online systems, and you may need to go to the VCC to have your photo taken. That said, your application might be approved almost instantaneously if you've previously been approved for an AIE Pass.
    • 60-Day Pass:  You may apply for a 60-day pass at the Visitor Control Center, located just inside the main gate.  The VCC is open 6am-5pm Mon-Fri and 10am-3pm Saturdays.  You should be able to obtain a 60-day Automated Installation Entry (AIE) Pass right on the spot.
You will need to complete an access application and be vetted through their security system.  To help speed the process, we suggest that you complete the Fort Myer Installation Access Request Form ahead of your visit and bring it with you.
    • Long-Term/Annual Pass:  With sponsorship by Patton Hall, you may be able to get an AIE Pass good for as long as a year.  Here's how it should work:
      • Register for the meeting by Monday, October 3, and indicate your desire to obtain a long-term pass.
      • We'll then ask our contact at Patton Hall to sponsor you for a pass.
      • We'll send you an email (on October 4 or soon after) confirming that your name has been forwarded, and that you can go to the VCC to apply for your pass.
      • Go to Ft. Myer during normal VCC hours (6am-5pm Mon-Fri and 10am-3pm Saturdays) sometime before the meeting.
      • We suggest you go to the VCC well before the meeting to avoid slamming them that afternoon.
      • When you arrive at the VCC, tell them that you're part of the Pentagon Ski Club group that is being sponsored by Ms. Hollo at Patton Hall.  They'll have pre-printed Installation Access Request Forms with Ms. Hollo's sponsorship.  All you'll need to do is present your driver's license and complete the form with your DOB and SSN.
      • If the process works as before, and assuming you pass their vetting process, you should be able to get a year-long pass during your visit to the VCC.

    $1,305*

    Listed price includes round-trip air.

"Full" Ikon Pass or Resort Lift Ticket Required (more below)
    .

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has 133 named trails including 50% expert, 40% intermediate and 10% beginner. The mountain features 12 lifts including Bridger Gondola and “Big Red”, their World-famous Aerial Tram.  With 2500 acres of in-bound terrain and a whopping 4,139-foot vertical drop, there’s plenty of room to explore!

    Elk Country Inn

The trip package includes 6 nights (Tue-Mon) in the Elk Country Inn (hotel rooms) with daily continental breakfast, RT air from Washington to Jackson (details below), and ground transfers.

Amenities at the newly remodeled Elk Country Inn include a fitness room and an indoor/outdoor pool and hot tub.  Our rooms, with two Queen beds, are beautifully furnished in Knotty Pine and Old Hickory.  Add $490 for the single supplement if you want a room to yourself.   The Inn is just a short drive from Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson Hole Ski Resort, and less than an hour from Yellowstone National Park.

NOTE:  The club's trips to Jackson Hole typically include a day trip to Grand Targhee.  For a number of reasons, primarily related to the lift-ticket situation, we have decided not to include Grand Targhee in this-winter's trip package.

Daily mountain transfers are provided by the hotel (two up in the morning and one back in the afternoon).

Resort Lift Tickets:  Group lift tickets are not being offered by the resort during this holiday period, but you may purchase an individual lift ticket through the club.  We will purchase your ticket soon after you are confirmed on the trip, and it will be non-refundable.  A better option may be a "full" Ikon pass, which provides 7 days of skiing at the resort with no blackout dates (more below).   Resort lift ticket rates are as follows:

Lift Ticket Prices - Purchased Through Club (Non-Refundable)
     4 Day
     5 Day

     Adult (19-64)

     $732  $902
     Teen (13-18)
     $662  $826
     Senior (65+)
     $592  $728
     Youth  (5-12)
     $448  $554

    Prices Valid through 9/30/2022

You may also purchase your lift ticket directly from the resort.  They recommend purchasing lift tickets at least 14 days in advance of your visit for the best rates and to ensure availability of your desired ski dates.

Ikon Passes:  Ikon Passes, which must be individually purchased (not through the club), provide the best value if you plan more than one trip to an "Ikon resort."  (Note that SKI RESERVATIONS are being required by the resort for Ikon Pass holders; see more information below.)  Participants are encouraged to purchase their Ikon Pass early-on as the cost typically increases with time.  The cost of a full Ikon Pass was as follows, as of early June 2022:

    • $1179 - Adult (age 23+)
    •  $879 - Youth/Young Adult (age 13-22)
    •  $839 - College, Nurse and Military (Adult & Young Adult)
    •  $389 - Child (age 5-12)
    •  $149 - Toddler (age 4 & under)

You may purchase Ikon Passes directly from Ikon, but we suggest that you visit our Epic & Ikon Pass page to explore the various options available, including promotional offers from our tour operators.  They offer all except the military passes, which must be purchased directly from Ikon.  Our tour operator for this trip, Winter Ski and Sport, will afford you a rebate on your trip if you buy your Ikon Pass through them.

Ski/Lift Reservations Required:  Jackson Hole will require lift reservations for all Ikon Pass holders for the 2022-23 season "...to help manage capacity and offer the best guest experience."  Reservations will be made available starting August 1, 2022. To make a reservation, login to My Account on ikonpass.com Be sure to book your reservations early on as there is a risk of the available spaces being sold out.  Ski Reservations for those with lift tickets purchased through the club's broker are being handled by the broker.

    .

Epic Lift Upgrade!!  Vail Resorts is adding two substantial lift upgrades at Vail:

    • Sun Down Lift:  A new high-speed quad chair is being installed in the Sun Down Bowl from the base of Chair 5 (High Noon Express) to the Wildwood restaurant.  This will materially reduce wait times on peak days at Chair 5 and create the opportunity for skiers and riders to much more conveniently access the trails in Sun Down Bowl.
    • Game Creek Bowl:  The current 4-person chair is being replaced with a new high-speed 6-person lift.  This will increase capacity by nearly 50% and improve reliability in this popular bowl.

7 nights (Sat-Sat) in the Vail Spa Condos with welcome reception, RT air from Washington to Denver (details below), and ground transfers.

Ski some of Colorado's most celebrated slopes and enjoy world-class dining and entertainment in nearby Lionshead Village.  Vail Spa is just a short walk to the Eagle Bahn Gondola and directly on the free in-town bus route for convenient access to Vail Village and the lifts at Golden Peak.

Vail Spa amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas.  High-speed WiFi and complimentary housekeeping are included with every stay.  Each of our 2-bedroom/2-bath and 3-bedroom/3-bath units includes a full kitchen, gas fireplace and private laundry.

Add $1595 for the Single Supplement if you want a room (but not an entire condo unit) to yourself.

Lift Tickets:  Lift tickets are not included in the trip package, as Vail Resorts is no longer offering competitively priced group lift tickets.  Epic Passes, which must be individually purchased (not through the club), provide the best value.

Epic Passes:  Participants are encouraged to purchase an Epic Pass product of some type early-on.  The following options would cover your skiing for the trip; prices shown are as of late August 2022, and are set to increase on September 5:

    • A "full" Epic Pass ($859)
    • Military Epic Pass – Active/Retired ($149); Veteran ($490)
    • Epic Day Pass (the non-holiday-rate for an "all resort" pass) – ($430 for 5 days; $500 for 6 days)
    • Epic Local Pass ($639)

The cost typically increases at the start of the summer, and then again around Labor Day, and pass sales (except the Day Passes) are likely to end in November.

You may purchase Epic Passes directly from Vail Resorts, but we suggest that you visit our Epic & Ikon Pass page to explore the various options available, including promotional offers from our tour operators.  They offer all except the military passes, which must be purchased directly from Vail Resorts.

7 nights in Meribel plus one night in Geneva
Non-stop round-trip air, breakfast and dinner daily

    $825

Optional 4-Night pre-ski extension to Lausanne, Switzerland
Departs the U.S. Monday, Jan 16
Returns to the U.S. Saturday, Jan 28
(does not include the night in Geneva)

Les Trois Vallées, the world’s largest ski area, is made up of eight resorts linked via a comprehensive network of modern ski lifts.  This includes internationally famous resorts such as Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens, and other more family-orientated resorts with a charm all of their own such as Les Ménuires, La Tania, Brides-les-Bains, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Orelle.  50% of the ski area’s runs are considered easy (greens and blues) with the remaining 50% suitable for more proficient skiers (reds and blacks).

85% of the pistes are above 1,800m, enabling Les Trois Vallées to guarantee optimum snow conditions from early December to the end of April.  180 ski lifts are available to skiers, which ensure that you’ll spend more time on the slopes than in a queue.

These eight resorts also offer a unique range of off-piste and après-ski activities, as well as myriad events and entertainment and a wide choice of restaurants.

We will stay seven nights at the 4 star Hotel Alpen Ruitor in Meribel Mottaret offering exclusive and ready-to-go skiing to the largest ski domain in the world.  Breakfast buffet, pastry buffet from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm, and half-board with soup of the day, starter, main course, cheese buffet and desert.  Drinks are not included.  Savoyard Evening on Thursday with unlimited Fondue and Raclette.  Access to the spa. 100 square meters of dedicated serenity with Sauna, Hamman, Jacuzzi and Sensorial Shower.  Ski Room with individual heated lockers.  Free WiFi, Robes and slippers.

Listed cost is for double occupancy.  A limited number of rooms may be available for single occupancy (est @ $985, including the night in Geneva); request when registering and the trip leader will make an adjustment to your invoice if you can be confirmed.

Saturday Night in Geneva:  Those not going on the pre-trip will spend their final evening, Saturday January 28, in downtown Geneva at the 4-Star Hotel Royal.  A guided tour of the city is included.  Those who participate in the Lausanne pre-skiing extension will fly home on Saturday.

Hotel Royal is located in Geneva City Center, a neighborhood in Geneva, and is near a metro station.  Notre Dame Basilica and Mont Blanc Bridge are local landmarks, and travelers looking to shop may want to visit City Center Shopping Area and Rue du Rhône.

Lift Tickets:  Lift tickets are not included in the listed package price, but are available as an option during the registration/signup process, reflecting a modest (approx 10%) discount from the prices at the resort.  The tickets are for consecutive days; skiers buying a 5-day ticket will need to specify whether their first day of skiing will be on Sunday (January 22) or Monday (January 23):

Optional 4-Night pre-ski extension to Lucerne, Switzerland
Departs the U.S. Monday, Feb 27

Arlberg – The Cradle of Alpine Skiing.  Skiarlberg, considered one of the best ski areas for guaranteed snow in the Alps, has been captivating skiers and snowboarders from near and far ever since Austria's first surface lift added a measure of comfort to skiing in Lech Zürs am Arlberg. The Arlberg features more than 300 kilometres of downhill slopes, making it the largest connected ski area in Austria and the fifth largest in the world.

Our trip includes 7 nights (Sat-Sat) in the 4-star ski-in/ski-out Hotel Arlberghaus with daily breakfast and dinner.  RT air from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Zurich (details below).   Lift tickets not included.  Emergency medical, evacuation & repatriation insurance (not cancellation insurance) is included (details below).

The Arlberghaus, situated at 1,720 meters (5,640 ft) is the same hotel where the club stayed in 2018.  Free WiFi is included.

Our room inventory includes a mix of Classic and Deluxe double rooms, which we are offering at different price points, with priority for your preferred type based on your sign-up date.  If  your preferred choice isn't available, the trip leader will after confirming with you make an adjustment to your invoice.

Our Classic Double Rooms "... are characterised by cosy comfort, warm colouring, pleasant lighting and a wonderful view of the majestic mountain world of the Arlberg."

    Deluxe Double Room

Our  generously equipped Deluxe Double Rooms (aka "half apartments") "... are roomy, bright and open.  With sofa and armchair, the cosy living area invites guests to lean back and dream."

    Classic Single Room

A limited number of Classic Single Rooms is also available.  If you request a single room, the trip leader will confirm the cost and make an adjustment to your invoice if you can be confirmed.

The hotel offers an array of wellness amenities:   Relax in the sauna or steam bath, enjoy soothing warmth in the infrared cabin, or conclude the day with a leisurely fitness program.  "In the entire spa & wellness area of our hotel you sense all around you the revitalizing fragrance of pine-wood and mountain herbs. The crowning conclusion is a romantic bath under the starlit sky in our Dutch Tub."

Lift Passes:  Lift tickets are not included in the trip package.  The costs are listed on this website Here are this-winter's prices (updated 9/2/2022).  Note that these are characterized as "provisional" prices that "...are based on calculations carried out in August 2022. However, actual developments of the key cost factors used in the calculation of these prices (e.g. energy costs, inflation etc.) cannot be estimated at present. For this reason, it is possible that the prices may need to be re-calculated in the event of corresponding increases. We therefore reserve the right to adjust the prices for ski passes at a later date":

    4-night pre-skiing extension

departs from the U.S. Monday, February 27

Lucerne is known for its stunning medieval architecture and stunning location on the edge of Lake Lucerne amid snow-capped mountains.  Its colorful Altstadt (old town) is bordered on the north by the 870m Museggmauer (Musegg Wall), a 14-century rampart.  The covered Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), built in 1333, links the Aldstadt to the Reuss River's right bank.

    Chapel Bridge

Our excursion includes four nights (Tues-Sat) in the 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel with daily breakfast and a half-day guided city tour.

Surrounded by the famed mountains of Switzerland, the Radisson Blu is an ideal base for our vacation with its many amenities including free Wi-Fi and in-room coffee and tea facilities.  The hotel’s award-winning LUCE restaurant serves a variety of delectable Mediterranean and Swiss dishes.  Or try a creative cocktail or vintage wine in the LUCE's Bar or Wine Lounge.  On-site services include a fitness center, a sauna, and a steam bath.

Things To Do:  Our included guided city tour will be through the beautiful Old Town with its old buildings and bridges, narrow cobblestone alleyways, and gorgeous medieval squares with great boutiques, beautiful shops, cafes and great restaurants.  Others things of interest include the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), the Water Tower, the Spreuer Bridge, the Jesuit Church, the Bourbaki Museum, the Glacier Garden, the Swiss Transport Museum, and the Picasso and Rosengart Museums.  And we must take a cruise on Lake Lucerne!

Listed cost is for double occupancy.  A limited number of rooms may be available for single occupancy; request when registering and the trip leader will confirm availability and cost (est @ $660), and make an adjustment to your invoice if you can be confirmed.

You may purchase Epic Passes directly from Vail Resorts, but we suggest that you visit our Epic & Ikon Pass page to explore the various options available, including promotional offers from our tour operators.  They offer all except the military passes, which must be purchased directly from Vail Resorts.

Ikon Passes - Deer Valley:  Skiers who also have an Ikon Pass might want to spend a day or two skiing at nearby Deer Valley Resort.  A "Full" Ikon Pass affords you a total of 7 days of skiing at Deer Valley.  The Ikon Base Pass has no benefits at Deer Valley, but the Base Plus Pass gives you 5 days of benefits.
